Like the BMW M8 Coupé, the BMW 850i Convertible is clearly one of those BMW studies that unfortunately never found its way onto public roads. Developed as a competitor model for the new Mercedes-Benz SL series R129, which was also presented at the International Motor Show in 1989, this beautiful and unique BMW convertible unfortunately did not make it to series production. Thus, only 3 prototypes of the so-called BMW 850Ci based on the E31 series were built and subjected to extensive test drives before the decision was made in Munich to discontinue the 850Ci Cabriolet project for fear of economic failure.
