For nearly 40 years, Momo founder Gianpiero Moretti pursued a parallel career as a racing driver and entrepreneur. Moretti's time behind the wheel began in the early 1960s in hill climbs. Shortly thereafter, the Milan native made a name for himself designing his own steering wheels. The breakthrough came when he supplied Ferrari with components for the 158 F1, the car with which John Surtees won the 1964 World Championship. From then on, Gianpiero Moretti was Ferrari's official supplier, as company boss Enzo Ferrari placed great value on "Made in Italy." Later, he also drove for Ferrari himself, for example in 1970 with the newly developed 512 S, which competed against the Porsche 917.
Furthermore, Moretti soon began designing his own racing cars entirely with his company Momo, which he founded in 1966. The company name is derived from the first two letters of his family name and Monza.
Despite his special connection to Ferrari, Moretti also drove numerous races for Porsche. The 935 "Moby Dick," which he raced in the US IMSA Championship, was particularly popular. This was undoubtedly due to its striking red paintwork on the equally distinctive body shape, designed for low drag and giving the car its nickname – a reference to the white sperm whale from Herman Melville's novel of the same name. Furthermore, the charismatic businessman was a constant draw in the paddock, which was especially beneficial for Moretti given the importance of the US market.
In 1981, Moretti also made a guest appearance in the German Racing Championship at the Norisring with the red Moby Dick. During his guest start, he finished second in Division 1 behind Hans-Joachim Stuck in the BMW M1 Turbo. CMR has produced the Momo Porsche exclusively for ck-modelcars in a special scale of 1:12 using resin. The model was manufactured to their usual high standards and reflects the original as accurately as possible.
Even after selling his company in 1996, Moretti continued to achieve significant success with Ferrari. Driving the 333 SP prototype, in whose development he had played a key role, Moretti secured his best result of four Le Mans appearances in 1997, finishing sixth. The following year, he won the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen before retiring at the age of 60. Gianpiero Moretti died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 71.
