After dominating the rally world in the 1980s, Audi turned its attention to circuit racing in 1988. The Audi 200 Trans Am featured the same quattro technology that had already secured the World Rally Championship manufacturers' title for the brand in 1982 and 1984, and impressively demonstrated just how successful this all-wheel-drive concept could be on the circuit.

The Audi 200 quattro Trans Am caused a sensation for several reasons. Firstly, it impressed with its enormous dimensions: at 4.89 meters long and 2.03 meters wide, it remains the largest racing car in Audi's history. Secondly, after strong performances in the USA, it continued its success story on the international stage.

In the early 1990s, Audi Sport South Africa entered the 200 Trans Am in the Wesbank Modified Championship, with drivers including Hans-Joachim Stuck. Driven by Terry Moss and sporting the distinctive Rothmans livery, the car also achieved several victories and podium finishes in 1992, ending the season as runner-up in the championship.
