The 24 Hours of Daytona is one of the world's most prestigious endurance races. For decades, the famous Daytona International Speedway has hosted a diverse array of vehicle concepts, from prototypes to near-production GT cars. In 1997, a particularly impressive representative from Munich made its mark in the international field: the BMW M3 GTR based on the E36.
Model manufacturer WERK83 has created a meticulously detailed replica of this race car in sacle 1:18. The model impresses with its harmonious proportions and precise rendering of its characteristic racing look. The starting number 7, sponsor logos, and typical M3 GTR design elements have been faithfully reproduced.
Especially noteworthy are the functional details, such as the steerable front wheels and opening doors, which allow for a closer look at the model, not just a visual display. A glimpse into the faithfully reproduced cockpit reveals the typical racing atmosphere of the 1990s. The roll cage, bucket seat, and instrumentation provide a realistic impression of the original.
The exterior appearance of the M3 GTR has also been convincingly reproduced. The wide fenders, low stance, and clean lines give the model a dynamic presence that reflects the character of the original. These details are particularly striking at the scale of 1:18, making the model a real eye-catcher.
The car started the Daytona race with the number 7, driven by a top-class quartet of drivers: Marc Duez, Dieter Quester, Boris Said, and Markus Oestreich. Four experienced drivers with diverse backgrounds in rally, touring car, and endurance racing. This combination proved to be a decisive advantage over the 24-hour distance. Especially in a race like Daytona, characterized by high average speeds and long periods of full throttle, it's not just raw power that matters, but above all, consistency and reliability.
The BMW M3 GTR (E36) was built precisely for these demands. Its high-revving inline six-cylinder engine, paired with precise chassis tuning, made it an exceptionally well-balanced racing car. While many competitors focused on sheer engine power, the M3 impressed with its efficiency, reliability, and drivability. On the combined oval and infield circuit, the BMW showcased its strengths and proved that European touring car technology was also competitive on American terrain.
With the BMW M3 GTR (E36), WERK83 brings not only a piece of racing history to the display case, but also a model for collectors who value not only meticulous detail, but also the stories behind the vehicles and a worthy memento of the BMW M3's powerful performance on the grand stage of endurance racing.
The BMW M3 GTR (E36) is a must-have for any collector's display case. BMW M3 GTR (E36) #7 24h Daytona 1997 Duez, Quester, Said, Oestreich 1:18, RRP €79.95, item-no.: W18051005
