Tough, angular, legendary: The Niedzwiedz Omega Evo 500 as a model

Tough, angular, legendary: The Niedzwiedz Omega Evo 500 as a model

back to blog overview

Opel and the DTM - over decades, the brand was indispensable from the popular touring car championship. The Calibra and the Astra were true fan favorites. But even before these models, the Rüsselsheim-based company was active in series production – and with a very special racing car. RRP €79.95, item-no.: W18045003

In 1991, Opel entered the DTM with the Opel Omega Evo 500 Commodore. What made it special was its size, boxy design, and sophisticated technology. Its powerful inline six-cylinder engine, wide bodywork, and hydraulically controlled rear spoiler gave it a presence that thrilled spectators both on and off the track. While the competition focused on lightweight construction and agility, Opel, in collaboration with Irmscher, prioritized stability and raw engine power.

This robust machine was driven by a true veteran: Klaus Niedzwiedz. The man from Dortmund, Germany was already one of the most popular drivers in the field – not least because of his work as a journalist and television presenter. He competed in the DTM in 1991 for the Opel Team Eggenberger, one of eight drivers to do so. Niedzwiedz and his #25 Omega Evo 500 made their racing debut at the season opener in Zolder, Belgium.

Despite its relatively high weight, Niedzwiedz knew how to handle the Omega Evo 500 impressively. Even though he often struggled in direct duels with the BMW M3 and Mercedes 190E, he repeatedly demonstrated his driving skills and achieved respectable results, keeping Opel visible in the tightly contested DTM field. However, points and major victories eluded him.

Nevertheless, the car achieved a certain cult status – the Opel Omega 500 not only embodies a piece of motorsport history but is also a symbol of the fighting spirit of a brand that wanted to hold its own against overwhelmingly powerful opponents in Europe's toughest touring car series.

This makes the model a must-have for every DTM and Opel fan's collection. Thanks to WERK83, the car is now available in scale 1:18 for your display case at home. As is typical for WERK83, the model impresses with its authenticity and attention to detail – including steerable front wheels and opening doors.
