A non-red Formula 1 Ferrari is an extremely rare sight. Shortly before Christmas 1997, Michael Schumacher lapped the Ferrari test track in Fiorano in a completely black car. The mysterious-looking racer was the F300 for the upcoming 1998 season, which was being put through its paces.
It was painted black to conceal details from the competition. This secrecy had a good reason. Due to the new technical regulations, the cars changed drastically, shrinking in width from 2.00 meters to 1.80 meters. Furthermore, slick tires were replaced by grooved tires.
While Ferrari's package ultimately proved competitive, the Scuderia did not yet achieve its stated goal of winning the World Championship with Michael Schumacher. Schumacher finished as runner-up behind Mika Häkkinen, after winning six of the 16 Grands Prix.
WERK83 has released a model in scale 1:18 of the black Ferrari F300 test car from the Fiorano test drives. The cockpit has been faithfully reproduced. A driver figure is also included.
