The Bathurst 12 Hours at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia was the first race of the Intercontinental GT Challenge, or IGTC for short, in 2024. In this global GT3 racing series, manufacturers compete for the title across various endurance races on several continents.
Manthey Racing also participated in the opening race with its crowd-pleaser from the Nürburgring Nordschleife – the Grello. Named after its striking color scheme, the Porsche 911 GT3 R was driven at Mount Panorama by Ayhancan Güven, Laurens Vanthoor, and Matt Campbell. The trio qualified in fourth place, securing a strong starting position for the upcoming race.
Traditionally, the race started early in the morning in the dark. Laurens Vanthoor took the lead and quickly improved to second place. Later, Vanthoor was the only driver in the leading group to complete another lap in the first stint, allowing the No. 912 team to take the lead.
The Manthey Porsche then controlled the race at the front until a careless pit stop error resulted in a drive-through penalty, which led to a loss of the lead. But unpredictable weather conditions would later play into Grello's hands. Switching to wet tires, the team gained so much time on the opposition that Ayhancan Güven regained the lead.
The trio then held on until the checkered flag fell and crossed the line as the winner. Ayhancan Güven thus won on his Bathurst debut. Laurens Vanthoor also celebrated his maiden victory. For local hero Matt Campbell, it was his second success. Campbell had previously won in 2019 after taking first place with a spectacular maneuver shortly before the end of the race.
Manthey Racing's Grello is not only one of the most famous GT3 cars of the last decade, but also one of the most successful. As an icon and fan favorite, the car is known worldwide. Numerous victories in the Nürburgring Endurance Series, a triumph at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, the DTM title, and the first international victory in 2024 at Bathurst ensure a remarkable record that is sure to be enhanced by several more successes in the coming years.
The winning car from the 2024 Bathurst 12 Hour is available from manufacturer Ixo in scale 1:18 as an official Manthey Racing product for your home display. The model was produced to the usual high quality and reflects the original as accurately as possible.
