With 19 overall victories and a great variety of vehicles, Porsche has a multifaceted history at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. These days, the successful racing cars of the past often serve as models for special designs on the current cars, with which the Zuffenhausen-based company presents its history in the endurance classic.
In 2020, the occasion was obvious. Porsche's first Le Mans triumph in 1970 marked its 50th anniversary. Back then, Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood were successful in the red and white 917 from Porsche Salzburg. Porsche fielded a reinterpretation of this design in 2020 on one of its two factory 911 RSRs. In addition to the striking red and white colors, the white stripes, which indicated the year "1970" when viewed from above, were eye-catching. With this special livery, Porsche aimed for victory in what was then the GTE Pro class, which has since been replaced by the GT3 category.
The project began successfully. In the inaugural Hyperpole, the Porsche GT Team secured the best starting position in its class. However, the race ended disappointingly. An electrical repair on Sunday morning cost them the lead. While Aston Martin won, Richard Lietz, Gianmaria Bruni, and Frédéric Makowiecki finished fifth, ahead of their teammates in the second factory car.
Incidentally, Porsche fans only saw the red and white 911 on television or online during the race, as the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans was held behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Three years later, thankfully, the opposite was true. For the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 2023 event was bursting at the seams. GR Racing celebrated the anniversary with a two-part livery on its Porsche 911 RSR. On the left side, the familiar black and orange livery, still used by Mike Wainwright's team today, was visible. On the right side, the Porsche wore the famous Gulf livery in light blue and orange. This color scheme has a long tradition, and not only at Porsche. GR Racing operated under the name Gulf Racing until 2020 and thus competed in the World Endurance Championship with the full Gulf livery.
The comeback of the Gulf colors at Le Sarthe was a success. With his teammates Ben Barker and Riccardo Pera, Mike Wainwright finished third in the GTE Am class, thus securing a podium finish at the last Le Mans race with GTE cars.
Ixo has released the two Porsche 911 RSRs with their special liveries in scale 1:18, which are available from ck-modelcars. The models were produced in the usual high Ixo quality and reflect the originals as closely as possible.
