The untold story of the BMW M3 E36 - a DTM-dream that never became reality

The untold story of the BMW M3 E36 - a DTM-dream that never became reality

back to blog overview

The BMW M3 (E36) in scale 1:18 by WERK83 or why BMW didn't compete in the DTM in 1993, RRP €79.95, item-no.: W18051001

When the BMW M3 is mentioned, many immediately think of legendary touring car races, motorsport history, and pure driving pleasure. The E36 series is often overshadowed by its predecessor, the E30 – wrongly. The E36 was not only a technical advancement, but also could have played a very special role in the 1993 DTM season.

This sporty DNA now lives on in a model from WERK83: the BMW M3 E36 in the plain body version in scale 1:18. The model impresses with its clean lines and unfussy appearance. It is precisely this purist representation – without sponsor logos or racing livery – that particularly highlights the car's design. The front wheels are steerable, the doors can be opened, and the interior also features a detailed design.

What many don't know: BMW planned a return to the DTM in 1993 with the E36 M3. A near-production race car had been developed, and the motorsport team was ready – but the project was halted shortly before the start of the season. The reason was a dispute over the interpretation of the regulations. While other manufacturers opted for V-engines, BMW wanted to stay true to its roots and use the classic inline six-cylinder engine. Head of Motorsport Paul Rosche remained steadfast – the result: no factory participation, no M3 on the DTM track. But the accumulated know-how was not in vain: Instead of competing in the DTM, the M3 E36 competed in series such as the Warsteiner ADAC Cup, which Johnny Cecotto won in its first year.

Technically, the M3 E36 was a true milestone in its era. It delivered impressive performance and high-revving dynamics. Thanks to its perfect balance and rear-wheel drive, the chassis provided the ideal basis for motorsport. The fact that BMW forwent a V-arrangement testifies to its confidence in its own engineering skills – a hallmark that can also be found in today's M models.

The WERK83 model is more than just a collector's item: It tells a motorsport story, for fans of the 90s, for BMW enthusiasts, or for collectors looking for something special.

Even though it never officially competed in the DTM, its presence, potential, and history make the M3 E36 Plain Body a fascinating model with character. And that's exactly what collecting is all about: preserving stories in miniature.
