Renault was once the dominant team in Formula 1: After the upward trend had already become apparent in previous years, the racing team celebrated numerous victories and took home the drivers' and constructors' titles in 2005 and 2006. Given Alpine's current performance, this is hard to imagine. Renault's successor team did not even make it into the points in half of the races in 2024.
The farwell from the ranks of the top teams followed promptly: With Alonso's departure to McLaren-Mercedes in the 2007 season, the team fell back into the midfield. Although there were always respectable successes, the team from Enstone never found its way back to its former strength, which is why the Renault R26 remains the last world championship car from Renault for the time being.
Flavio Briatore is back: He was the one who led the former Benetton racing team to success and, as manager of Fernando Alonso, pretty much swept away everything that was possible. Defending his title in 2006 was one of the Italian's absolute career highlights before he involuntarily disappeared from the scene just a few years later due to "Crashgate". Today, Briatore is back in a leading role in the Alpine team.
Michael Schumacher would also have deserved this title: Schumi was Alonso's biggest rival in the 2006 World Championship duel. The German, who ended his career (for the time being) at the end of the season, had a close battle with the Spaniard throughout the season. Both of them took home seven wins each. Alonso had the upper hand in the finale in Brazil.
The Renault R26 belongs in the display case: just because of the light blue and yellow color scheme, which is reminiscent of the special title duel and the rise of Renault in Formula 1. But Minichamps offers even more reasons to secure the model in scale 1:18. The original cockpit replica shows tiny details and the driver figure rounds it all off. The model, which is available exclusively from ck-modelcars, is limited to 444 pieces.
