When the chequered flag was waved in the final race of the 2021 DTM season, which took place at the Norisring for the first time, Maximilian Götz was crowned champion. Götz comes from the Nuremberg region and was therefore able to take the title in front of his home crowd. The decision was only made in Sunday's race, which Götz won to become champion by just three points ahead of Liam Lawson.
This thriller-like showdown was made possible because the two rivals in the overall standings, Liam Lawson and Kelvin van der Linde - one due to an accident and the other due to a puncture - crossed the finish line several laps behind Götz and were therefore unable to score any points. His two Mercedes brand colleagues Lucas Auer and Phillip Ellis then provided active support for Götz towards the end of the race when they let him pass without much resistance, giving him a clear run towards victory in the championship.
