Since the 1950s, the versatile bus has served as a transport and support vehicle for, among other things, the racing activities of the Porsche factory teams on various race tracks around the world.
Since Porsche was unable to provide its own transporters or delivery trucks during this time, the Zuffenhausen-based company initially resorted to the T1 model from Volkswagen. In addition to transporting tools, spare parts and mechanics, the van was also used as an overnight accommodation and shuttle for the drivers.
The follow-up model, the VW T2, was also a must for racing in the 1970s. The minibus, which was produced in Hanover from 1967 to 1979, impressed with its enormous amount of space and adequate external dimensions. The face of the T2 with the curved windshield and the integrated air inlets is still unmistakable today. Overall, it appeared much more angular than the previous model and was a full 20 centimeters longer.
The original red design of the racing service was appropriately retained on the T2 model and so the transporter could be recognized from afar in every paddock. The Martini Racing Team also shone with a T2 painted in the Martini design. However, this differed from the red van not only in color, but also in that it had fewer windows.
Minichamps offers the two legendary racing transporters in scale 1:43. In addition to the dark red racing service vehicle, which is limited to 504 units, the T2 is also available in the popular Martini design in an edition of 627 units.
