The first "proper" six-cylinder from the house of Ferrari

back to blog overview

Ferrari's interpretation of "downsizing" in the form of the 296 GTB and 296 GTB "Assetto Fiorano" by Bburago in scale 1:18.

The Ferrari 296 GTB came to the market in 2021 and was presented as the first proper Ferrari with six cylinders. The reason for this is that all previous models, which were equipped with six cylinders, appeared under the name "Dino" and not Ferrari. Even the coat of arms of the sports car manufacturer from Maranello was missing in these cases. This is not the case with the 296 GTB for the first time. The number 296 in the model name is a combination of these 6 cylinders and the displacement, which is 2.9 liters. The GTB stands for Gran Turismo Berlinetta. The label Bburago makes it possible for the Ferrari 296 GTB, as well as the even sportier variant "Assetto Fiorano", to have found its way into our shop in scale 1:18. The classic 296 GTB from Bburago is available in the typical Ferrari color red. The "Assetto Fiorano" variant has a two-tone design based on the 250 LM and is available from Bburago in our shop in red with white applications and in metallic grey with yellow applications. In addition to a detailed engine compartment, all models also have interior fittings that have been faithfully reproduced in detail. In the models, which have a very good price-performance ratio, the bonnet, doors and trunk can be opened.

In addition to the 296 GTB, there is also the 296 GTS (Gran Turismo Spyder), which has an automatically opening hardtop and was released a year later in 2022. If you want it to be even sportier, you can choose the “Assetto Fiorano” variant mentioned above. This is the racing equipment that combines various aerodynamic and weight-reducing measures. In addition to the Multimatic shock absorbers from racing, a total of 12 kg has been saved inside and outside through the targeted use of carbon fiber additives. What remains the same in all model variants is the engine. The 2.9 liter V6 delivers 663 hp. With a further 167 hp, which is contributed by an electric motor, the hybrid concept of the 296 achieves a total system output of 830 hp. The 296 is supposed to sprint from 0 to 100 kph in 2.9 seconds and only reach the end of its power development at 330 kph.

When it comes to the design, Ferrari speaks of a real Berlinetta with the 296, which is also proudly expressed with the “B” in “GTB”. The Berlinetta is closely related to the coupe and defines itself as a sporty, flat two-door body style. Contrary to the previous design philosophy from Maranello, which often used a fastback layout for the rear, the short wheelbase in connection with the muscular fenders and the visor-like roof were chosen as the salient design elements for the 296. The decision when choosing the engine was certainly not easy for Ferrari. One is better known for its rich V12 sound or at least V8 sound. In order to give the "small V12", as the V6 of the 296 GTB is also called, a befitting sound, Maranello has tried to do everything possible and direct the propagation of the sound exactly where it needs to be to reach the driver. Ferrari's CTO Michael Leiters told various trade journals that sound waves are picked up by a membrane in front of the catalytic converter and brought to the partition behind the driver by an air column. Leiters also explains that even the moment you close the sound waves through the turbocharger has a crucial effect on the sound, since the turbine wheels can also "chop up" the sound. The experiment seems to have been a success if one can believe various driving reports from relevant magazines, all of which attest the 296 only the theoretical lack of cylinders. The sound and driving pleasure should be unbroken compared to the other models from the recent past.
