Alfa Romeo as well as the Haas F1 team showed interest in the aspiring Formula 2-champion. Many a journalist even dreamed of a debut with Ferrari - not least, because the son of the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher belongs to the junior squad of the Italians. 

In November 2020, the guesswork around Mick's future finally came to an end. Schumacher signed a contract with team of Gene Haas for the coming season and was allowed to go to the first test drive just a few days after winning the Formula 2. As part of the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi, he drove the Haas VF-20 and covered valuable test kilometers in the process. "In the last few days I have tried to realize what happened this year and how far we have come," he said at the time.

It was an emotional test for the youngster, but also a bitter foretaste of his debut season with the Americans. At the end of the test day, they were 3.6 seconds behind the fastest time and 15th overall. The Haas team lacked pace in many ways, which shouldn't change in 2021 either.
