An Audi-limousine in the DTM 1990: Stuck and Röhrl write history

An Audi-limousine in the DTM 1990: Stuck and Röhrl write history

back to blog overview

At the German Touring Car Championship 1990, Audi used a car for the first time with the V8 quattro, which was developed on the basis of a luxury limousine. Two models of the Audi V8 quattro DTM are available from WERK83 in scale 1:18. RRP €79.95, item-no.: W1801501, W1801502

The Audi V8 quattro DTM was the third racing car that Audi sent to the international racetracks after the Audi 200 quattro and the Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am. Its heart, the 3.6-liter V8 engine, gave the all-wheel drive sedan 420 hp at a curb weight of just over 1,200 kilograms. Thanks to the Audi quattro technology, the V8 shone despite its weight with strong acceleration and safety in fast corners, which enabled Audi to successfully compete against established vehicles such as the BMW M3 and the Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 EVO.

During the 1990 DTM season, Hans-Joachim Stuck shone with consistently strong results in the number 44 car. But the quattro had to take a back seat on the high-speed tracks. The unchanged body shape compared to the production model gave the car a boost at high speeds, which initially seemed to play into the hands of the competition. But Stuck secured two podium places on the first two race weekends and then went on to record seven additional victories over the course of the season, ultimately winning the championship title.

Walter Röhrl demonstrated his team spirit and his incomparable precision and experience in the sister car with starting number 45. Since only one Audi V8 quattro had initially been prepared for Audi and for use in the DTM by Konrad Schmidt Motorsport Technik, Röhrl only took part in the last eight races of the 1990 DTM season with the second V8 quattro. Röhrl gave up his triumph in the first race at the Norisring in favor of his racing colleague Stuck's championship ranking and ended up in eleventh place in the overall ranking with one victory and three podium places.

The two successful vehicles from the first DTM season of the Audi V8 quattro are available from WERK83 in scale 1:18 and in the usual high quality. Both have true-to-original cockpit replicas and opening doors and provide a real piece of DTM history for the collector's shelf.
