An RWB wide body designed by Akira Nakai based on the Porsche 911 (993)

back to blog overview

Solido presents another wide body-Porsche, whose client commemorated a samurai when naming the vehicle.

RWB stands for exclusive wide buildings from Japan. Akira Nakai-San is the name of the man who runs a small workshop about an one hour drive from Tokyo that is now known all over the world. At the age of 28, Akira Nakai-San fulfilled his dream and bought a Porsche 930, which he converted immediately. This was the start of what car enthusiasts know today as the abbreviation “RWB”. In addition to other RWB models in the ck-modelcars shop, the “Shingen” model from the label Solido is now also available. The wide-body Porsche from Solido has an interior that is true to the original, steerable front wheels and doors that can be opened. The model in scale 1:18 in Miami blue is a replica of the 911 (993) designed and built in 2018 for Japanese racing driver Toshiya Ichiraku. Ichiraku chose the name “Shingen” himself. He commemorates a samurai known in Japan named Takeda Shingen. As with every RWB Porsche, it is a one-of-a-kind piece tailored to the customer and designed by Akira Nakai himself.

The founder of RWB comes from the drift scene. The group he belonged to was called the “Rough World Drift Crew”. It is thanks to his love for Germany and German cars that he relatively freely translated the name of his drift crew into German and made it his company name. Since then it has been operating under the name “Rauh World Term”. Its extreme wide-body kits are visually based on the Porsches that once competed as touring cars or in endurance races. It's been around 15 years since Akira Nakai made the first Porsche conversions for his customers. The workshop where Nakai-San works while he chain smokes cigarettes has remained the same ever since. However, he now has a manager with whom he certifies workshops around the world to market his RWB kits. As standard, such a kit includes a front and a rear bumper, as well as four widened fenders, a few side skirts and various small parts. The rear spoiler is usually either a GT-2 or a 3.8 RS rear spoiler.

Akira Nakai-San himself discusses with his customers what wishes a customer has and what the car should look like in the end. The process afterwards is always the same, but that doesn't make it any less impressive. After the order has been placed, the GRP parts are manufactured in Japan and then sent to the partner workshop from which the end customer ordered. There the parts are painted in the desired color. Then comes the most exciting part of the whole thing - the final assembly. This is so special because Akira Nakai-San takes over it personally. He flies from country to country and converts around 60 vehicles a year. He works alone until late at night and usually completes a renovation in 2-3 days. If you want an RWB conversion, you should expect to spend around $40,000 just for the conversion. Anyone who is concerned with the issue of “preserving the value” of their Porsche will hesitate when deciding on an RWB kit. The calmness with which Akira Nakai-San saws off the original fenders from Zuffenhausen in order to mount the GRP fenders of the wide body with screws on the remaining stubs of the original fender could bring tears to some people's eyes. However, what you get in return is an exclusive, unique piece. You also become part of the RWB family, which - as some say - is unparalleled in terms of solidarity and passion for cars.
