McLaren F1 Team brings Gulf Racing to the Monaco GP

McLaren F1 Team brings Gulf Racing to the Monaco GP

back to blog overview

In motorsport there are companies and sponsors whose colors and designs have been ubiquitous for generations.

Without any doubt, one of those iconic colorways is the Gulf design that brought the McLaren F1 Team back to the premier class for the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix.

Gulf Racing achieved fame in the 1960s and 1970s with the Ford GT40 and later with the Porsche 917. Several overall victories at the long-distance classic in Le Mans brought the orange and light blue design the icon status it has retained to this day. But McLaren has also been part of Gulf Racing from the start.

"Gulf and McLaren share a relationship that dates back to 1968 and is one of the most successful partnerships in motorsport," said Mike Jones, Gulf Oil's managing director. "We are very much looking forward to honoring this legacy with our classic design at the Monaco Grand Prix, the most spectacular and stylish event on the Formula 1 calendar."

The planning for the special optics of the two McLaren MCL35M began long before they were used in the streets of Monte Carlo. The aim was to optimally integrate the classic design into the modern design of the Formula 1-car.

After the work was done, the two McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo started at the Monaco Grand Prix on the weekend of May 23rd, 2021 with the special design. But as iconic as the design of the vehicle was, the outcome of the race was just as unfortunate for Australian Daniel Ricciardo.

The Monaco track is notorious for making it very difficult for drivers to overtake. This fate befell him too. After a mediocre qualifying session, Ricciardo only started the race from twelfth position. Even though he had good speed in his second stint on the hard tires, he couldn't convert it into a better position and also finished the race in twelfth place.

The model in scale 1:18 was produced in the usual high Minichamps quality. With a faithful replica cockpit with driver figure, the MCL35M is an absolute eye-catcher. The Gulf Racing McLaren is limited to 233 examples and comes in a collector's folding box.
