At the end of the 1980s, these two cars amongst other things from the house of BMW, caused a sensation. One, because it respresents the first sports coupe, which was built from the car manufacturer from Munich and the first vehicle from BMW that bears the designation "M". The other, because for the time it offered a class of luxury that was still unparalleled. Today's blog post is about the BMW M3 E30 from Minichamps in white and black metallic from 1987 and the BMW 730i E32 in light blue metallic or grey metallic from 1986. The models are in scale 1:18 and have various functinos. Both the bonnet, which traditionally opens forwards from the windscreen in the models, as well as the trunk and doors can be opened, giving a clear view of the engine compartment and the interior, which Minichamps has faithfully reproduced in detail from the originals. With these models, Minichamps offers us a piece of German automotive history for the home in the usual high quality.
What originally started with a homologation model for the German Touring Car Championship in 1985, is nowadays known as a true classic of the M-series from BMW. This was already evident back then when, after the presentation at the IAA, the demand for the new M3 was so great that the quantities produced were far greater than originally planned. The BMW M3 was one of the competitors of the Mercedes 190 E both in the context of the German Touring Car Championship and in the private sphere. The regulations of Group A at that time stipulated that, in order to be allowed to use a car in racing, at least 5,000 road-legal copies had to be sold withing twelve months. The appearance of the BMW M3 E30 has been significantly revised compared to the series 3-series in order to demonstrate its racing genes to the outside world. The front spoiler, the rear bumper, the sill panels, and the change in the bodywork in the area of the rear window were visible features of this. Production of the two-door sedan was discontinued in the fall of 1990. The convertible was produced a little longer, until mid-1991. In addition to almost 16,000 limousines and more than 800 convertibles, 62 Alpina models were also built between November 1987 and December 1990.
With the 7-series of the BMW E32, a new luxury class sedan was presented in September 1986. Before a variant with a twelve-cylinder engine was also available under the name 750i a year later, the 730i was initially equipped with the tried-and-tested six-cylinder engine. However, what was by no means normal for that time were features such as a refrigerator, telephone and high-quality leather. The standard equipment already included ABS, various memory functions and catalytic converters. Starting with the 735i model, details such as heated door locks were also available on the BMW options list. Airbags were also available as an option for the 7 Series. Thanks to the anti-corrosion protection applied at the factory, many 7-series vehicles from that time just have few rust problems. The engines are also still considered to be extremely durable. Nevertheless, the number of registered vehicles of the E32 series in Germany has fallen from 2005 (just over 42,000) to a level of almost 4,000 vehicles in 2021.
