The DTM of the early 1990s was characterized by a fascinating mix of diverse vehicle concepts. Mercedes-Benz, Alfa Romeo, Opel, and BMW engaged in thrilling duels, while the occasional exotic car also found its way into the highly competitive starting grid. One of these was the Ford Mustang 5.0 GT with starting number 33, driven by Gerd Ruch in the 1993 season. Even though the Mustang was never among the series' dominant cars, it was nonetheless an absolute fan favorite.
WERK83 has now dedicated a highly detailed model car in scale 1:18 to this DTM car. The characteristic racing livery with starting number 33 has been flawlessly reproduced and conveys the authentic look of the original. The Mustang's angular bodywork of that era is particularly striking in this larger scale.
Highlights of the model include the steerable front wheels, the opening doors, and the faithfully reproduced cockpit interior. A look inside reveals the functional racing atmosphere of the early 1990s, complete with bucket seats, roll cage, and instrumentation. All these details impressively reflect the character of the original.
The American sports car differed significantly from its European competitors. While Mercedes relied on the highly developed 190E Evolution II and Alfa Romeo on the technically revolutionary 155 V6 TI, the Mustang embodied classic American motorsport philosophy.
It was precisely this distinctiveness that made the Mustang so fascinating at the time. One image remained particularly memorable for spectators: during braking and upshifting, flames several meters high regularly shot from the Mustang's exhaust system. Combined with the sonorous V8 sound, this spectacle ensured an unmistakable appearance and made the Ford Mustang one of the most emotionally engaging cars on the starting grid. Even though major sporting successes eluded it, the American touring car quickly won a firm place in the hearts of fans.
More than three decades later, the Mustang name has found its way back to the DTM. Since the 2025 season, the current Ford Mustang GT3 has once again competed in Germany's most prestigious touring car series, perhaps continuing the brief but unforgettable DTM history of its predecessor.
