With the current G80/G81 generation, BMW has achieved a feat that many fans of the brand have long awaited: the M3 is finally available as a Touring. What was previously considered wishful thinking, the combination of uncompromising M performance and a practical station wagon body became reality with the G81. Since its introduction, the M3 Touring has been causing a stir, not only because of its performance figures, but also because it fills a market gap that its competitors have been consistently addressing for some time.
The model that Solido has now released captures precisely this spirit: a family station wagon with the soul of a sports car. In metallic purple, the G81 is particularly striking. A color that underscores the vehicle's extroverted character. The model's front wheels are steerable, and the doors open to reveal the faithfully reproduced interior. This demonstrates Solido's meticulous attention to detail, even in its road-going vehicles.
Technically, the G81 is based on the current M3 of the G80 series. This means that under the hood is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, which in the Competition version delivers 530 hp and a maximum torque of 650 Nm to all four wheels – as the Touring comes standard with xDrive all-wheel drive. This allows the powerful wagon, weighing in at over 1.8 tons, to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 3.6 seconds and reach an optional top speed of 280 kph. This figure illustrates how closely the G81's performance matches that of true super sports cars.
What makes the G81 Touring special, however, is not only its technology but also its positioning: It is the first true M3 Touring ever, as none of the previous model series offered a production Touring version with the full M badge. The excitement was all the greater when BMW unveiled the model in 2022, finally taking this step and encountering a loyal fan base that had been eagerly awaiting it.
The Solido model in scale 1:18 brings this story to the collector's shelf with a striking paint finish and impressive details. Whether as an addition to an existing BMW M collection or as a standalone highlight, the BMW M3 Touring G81, both in model form and in real life, makes a powerful, practical, and stylish statement.
