When Stefan Bellof crashed at the 1000km race in Spa-Francorchamps on September 1st, 1985, motorsport not only lost an exceptional talent – ??it also lost one of the most charismatic drivers of his generation. Bellof, considered by many to be a future world champion, had shared the cockpit of the number 19 Porsche 956K with Belgian Thierry Boutsen. On lap 77, Bellof attempted to overtake the leading Jacky Ickx in the dreaded Eau Rouge corner – a maneuver that ended tragically. A collision occurred, Bellof's car slammed head-on into the guardrail and was completely destroyed. Emergency services could do nothing to save the young German. The race was abandoned after 847 kilometers.
With the now available model in scale 1:12, the label WERK83 commemorates Bellof's last race car. The Porsche 956K was crafted from high-quality resin and impresses with its aerodynamically precise shape, faithful paintwork, and numerous intricate details. From the striking cockpit to the curved wheel arches and the flat nose, every feature of the original was meticulously recreated.
At the time, the Porsche 956K was considered the benchmark in endurance racing: an aerodynamically perfected Group C prototype that caused a sensation at Le Mans, Daytona, and Spa. Kremer Racing, Joest, and the Porsche factory team, among others, celebrated great successes with the 956. Bellof himself set a lap record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in this car in 1983 – a record that remained unmatched for decades.
Between 1982 and 1985, the Porsche 956 dominated the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans almost unchallenged. In its very first use in 1982, the factory team achieved a one-two-three victory – a historic result that impressively underscored how far ahead Porsche was of the competition in the Group C prototype field. Further overall victories followed in 1983, 1984, and 1985, each time with factory or customer vehicles. Not only the technical sophistication of the 956 was impressive, but also its reliability on the infamous endurance race. Driving legends such as Jacky Ickx, Derek Bell, Hans-Joachim Stuck, and Al Holbert piloted the 956 with utmost precision, creating unforgettable racing moments. With a total of four Le Mans victories within four years, the Porsche 956 wrote an important chapter in motorsport history – and remains one of the most successful racing cars ever to compete at Le Mans.
For collectors, Porsche fans, and motorsport enthusiasts, this model is far more than just an eye-catcher – it is a symbol of the fascination, but also the danger, of motorsport. It represents speed, courage, and tragedy. And it pays tribute with great precision to a driver whose star faded far too soon – but continues to shine today.
