Porsche's white whale: Two different "Moby Dick"

Porsche's white whale: Two different "Moby Dick"

back to blog overview

The Porsche 935/78 was the most powerful and aerodynamically advanced model of its era. Designed specifically for endurance racing, it wrote its own chapter in motorsport history in the late 1970s. CMR offers two models in scale 1:12 of this unique vehicle. RRP €219.95, item-no.: CMR12030, CMR12031

Porsche's first water-cooled racing car shone with its impressive performance in its first and only season in 1978. The Porsche 935/78, affectionately known as the "Moby Dick" due to its distinctive shape and white base color, was a further development of the 935/77. Aerodynamic optimization was achieved through the elongated rear end, the powerful rear wing, and the long, wide front end. The 3.2-liter twin-turbo boxer engine with over 800 hp propelled the unique white whale to over 360 kilometers per hour.

At the 1978 German Racing Championship at the Norisring, none other than legendary driver Jacky Ickx took the wheel of the Moby Dick with starting number 40. However, the Belgian was unable to bring the 935 across the finish line at the Nuremberg 200 Miles. After promising practice laps and a good starting position of fourth place, Ickx was forced to retire early due to technical problems. Nevertheless, the familiar Martini livery of white, blue, and red made the car an eye-catcher.

After the Porsche 935/78 ended its career at the end of the 1978 season and moved into the Porsche Museum, a little brother entered the racing scene at the beginning of the 1980s – the Porsche 935/78-81. This car was a replica of the legendary Porsche 935/78 "Moby Dick" built by Joest Racing, based on the Porsche factory plans. It was designed for the American IMSA GTX class, which had been added to Le Mans that year. Unlike the original, the heart of the blue and white car was a 2.7-liter flat-six turbocharged engine with approximately 700 hp from the Porsche 930/79.

At the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans, the little white whale lived up to all expectations. Despite an unfortunate starting position in the back of the field, the driver duo of John Fitzpatrick and David Hobbs firmly took the lead and, in addition to fourth place overall, won the IMSA GTX class.

CMR offers a piece of motorsport history with the two models of the Porsche 935 "Moby Dick" in scale  its 1:12.
