The race weekend that Ferrari went blue 2024

The race weekend that Ferrari went blue 2024

back to blog overview

Bburago has provided a good reason to look into Ferrari's history: with the two models of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz at the Formula 1 in Miami 2024. RRP 126.99 €, item-no.: 18-16815MIAMI #16, 18-16815MIAMI #55

Special designs are now so commonplace in Formula 1 that they almost no longer deserve the label "special". Especially in the spectacular and dazzling races, the vehicles are often wrapped in new colors and adapted to the respective event.

Ferrari has chosen the first of three guest appearances in the USA in 2024. "The upcoming Miami Grand Prix will be a memorable event in the history of our team, because in Florida we will celebrate our heritage with a unique livery and rediscover two colors that are part of our history," said Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur at the time.

The Frenchman was referring to the blue splashes of color that the design for Miami brought with it. Parts of the front and rear wings, the halo or the wheel covers - blue tones were suddenly visible everywhere. The fact that this was to celebrate the new partnership with HP was just a side note. It was much more about the history that Vasseur alluded to.

The color blue plays a fundamental role in Ferrari's history in the premier class. To be precise: the colors "Azzurro La Plata" and "Azzurro Dino" are the ones that Ferrari fans know from the past and may have recognized in the special design for Miami.

So "Azzurro La Plata" is the color, which adorned Alberto Ascari's helmet and suit. The Italian gave Ferrari the world championship title in 1952 and 1953. But the legend from Monza was not the only one to wear the color. In the 1960s, it became a traditional suit color for drivers such as John Surtees, Lorenzo Bandini, Ludovico Scarfiotti and Chris Amon. Even Niki Lauda wore it at times. The "Azzurro Dino" color can be recognized by the fact that it is a little darker. Ferrari drivers such as Arturo Merzario and Clay Regazzoni preferred this blue.

Incidentally, there was also a blue and white Ferrari in Formula 1 before. For the last races in 1964, Ferrari started under the banner of the North American Racing Team N.A.R.T. This was associated with the color combination of white and blue. But at the time it had nothing to do with a marketing campaign. The reason for the color scheme was a dispute between Enzo Ferrari and the automobile associations.

So, now enough history and back to 2024, when Bburago is devoting itself to the latest models from Formula 1. The miniatures in scale 1:18 from the Miami Grand Prix have all sorts of special features - including the driver figure and the true-to-original cockpit replica. The front wheels are also steerable.
