Authentic set for the golden Porsche years in Le Mans

Authentic set for the golden Porsche years in Le Mans

back to blog overview

The 1970s were the golden age of the Porsche 917K. A set from Brumm limited to 75 units offers two 917K winning models from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, various figures and accessories as well as the legendary Porsche racing transporter in scale 1:43. RRP €249.95, item-no.: S2403

The Porsche 917K is a legend of motorsport and is particularly well-known for its success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1970, the Salzburg Porsche Holding team, led by Ferdinand Porsche's daughter Louise Piëch, surprisingly took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and showed its class in training and qualifying.

The Austrians brought two Porsche 917s to France. The red 917K with starting number 23 was driven by Hans Herrmann, who narrowly missed out on victory against Jacky Ickx in the Ford GT40 the previous year. Herrmann shared the cockpit with Briton Richard Attwood. The sister car, a Porsche 917 long tail in Martini design, was driven by Vic Elford and Kurt Ahrens. The duo retired from the lead a few hours before the end of the race with engine failure. Hermann and Attwood then took over his position. Despite adverse weather conditions and the dramatic Ferrari disaster in Maison Blanche, the two secured Porsche's first overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In the so-called "race of records" the following year in 1971, Porsche repeated its triumph at Le Mans. This time, the Austrian Helmut Marko and the Dutchman Gijs van Lennep took the wheel of a 917K. In addition to the brilliant overall victory, the team set a distance record of 5,335 kilometers driven that stood until 2010. The 917 with the Martini design and starting number 22 was chased around the demanding course at an impressive average speed of over 222 kph including pit stop times. Other records in the Porsche 917 were set by Pedro Rodríguez with the fastest average speed in training of over 250 kph and his teammate Jackie Oliver with the fastest race lap to date of 3:13.6 minutes.

In addition to the shooting stars on the track, the Porsche racing transporter was the secret favorite in the 1970s. As an indispensable element of the team that transported iconic racing cars such as the Porsche 917 to the famous race tracks in Europe, it also deserves a place on the collector's shelf. The Porsche racing transporter was the converted Mercedes-Benz O 317 bus model, which was specially adapted for transporting Porsche racing cars and their equipment. The impressive bus conversion offered space for several vehicles as well as spare parts and tools. With its eye-catching Porsche lettering and the typical color scheme in white and red, the transporter itself became a symbol of the golden era of Porsche motorsport history.

The lovingly put together set from Brumm includes the models of the racing transporter and the two Porsche 917s that won at Le Mans. The figures of two drivers and four mechanics are also included. There is also a set of tires and a car cover. The 75 sets are limited exclusively for ck-modelcars and individually numbered.
