Already between 1972 and 1997, Porsche produced sports versions of the 911 models that were popular at the time. At that time, these all bore the name Carrera RS. In 1999 the 996 series appeared and four years later its sports version, which was called the “GT3 RS” for the first time. The idea behind the GT3 models is to create a street-legal version of the current 911 GT3 Cup racing car and thus bring a lot of purism to the street version. Because the RS in the type designation stands for Rennsport in German (racing in English) and is intended to make it clear that everything in the vehicle's equipment is designed for sporty driving. 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the appearance of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and with the new GT3 RS based on the 992 model series, the sixth generation of the “RS” will appear. Minichamps has dedicated a 2-car set exclusively for ck-modelcars to this birthday. The set consists of the GT3 RS models from the 996 and 992 series and is limited to just 300 pieces. The models in scale 1:43 are painted white and have red rims and a red racing decor. Anyone who likes the 20-year-old 996 better than the modern model will also find what they are looking for. Limited to 504 pieces and also in a scale of 1:43, the Porsche 911 (996) GT3 RS from Minichamps is also available exclusively for ck-modelcars as a single model. Here the rims and racing decor are in blue.
A lot has happened in 20 years of model maintenance. If we ignore the fried egg-shaped headlights, which were only available in the Porsche 911 in the 996 series, the car from Zuffenhausen that was released at the time has impressive values. The 996 GT3 RS is 20kg lighter than the series version. It takes 4.4 seconds to sprint to 100 kph. This is made possible by the six-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 3.6 liters and an output of 381 hp. When it comes to paintwork, the choice for the customer is easy, as the 996 GT3 RS is only available in Carrara white. The customer can only choose between blue and red when it comes to the color of the rims and the racing stripes on the sides of the vehicle. The sports car, which cost 120,000 euros, weighed 1,360 kg.
20 years later, the 911 GT3 RS appears based on the current 992 series. Visually, it is even closer to racing than all of its predecessors. When you see it parked on the side of the road, you tend to make sure that this car actually has license plates mounted on it and that it is not a race car that was parked there for a short time. If you get the impression that he has become “fatter” than his brother the 996, who is 20 years older than him, then that is not only due to the 165 kg he has gained, but also to the fact that he is 13 cm wider. The six-cylinder boxer engine has remained. However, this now produces 525 hp from 4 liters of displacement and completes the sprint to 100 kph in 3.3 seconds. With a base price of just under 250,000 euros, the price has almost doubled in 20 years. However, anyone who decides to drive a 996 GT3 RS in 2024 will quickly notice that something has changed in terms of price over the last 20 years. In good condition you even pay more than for the current version of the road sports car.
