In the 1950s and early 1960s, the Formula 1 World Championship mainly consisted of up to eight races in Europe. The works teams brought their racing cars to the circuits in large open car transporters, while private drivers such as Joakim Bonnier sometimes towed their own cars across Europe on trailers behind their cars. Before the large semi-trailer trucks found their way into the paddocks in the 1980s, many teams had special bodies built in the 1970s, which were mostly based on well-known bus chassis. Ken Tyrrell chose British Leyland Leopard buses as the basis for his 6-wheeled Tyrrell P34 from 1976.
Together with a kind of furniture van and a Ford Transit in the typical eleven Tyrrell dark blue, this fleet formed a fortress of vehicles in the paddocks, which provided a sheltered space for mechanics and drivers, covered by awnings. There are wonderful pictures from this period that show the intricate front of the dismantled P34 in detail, while behind it a mechanic works on the dismantled Cosworth V8, usually with a casual cigarette in the corner of his mouth. Big business had long since begun in Formula 1 in 1976, but the scenes from back then exude a very special charm today, to which the typical race transporters also contribute.
