Lanica 037: The last World Champion of its kind

Lanica 037: The last World Champion of its kind

back to blog overview

The Lancia 037 is the last rear wheel driven vehicle, which had won the 1983 rally World Cup. The model in the striking Martini-Design for the living room is now available in scale 1:18 by WERK83. RRP €79.95, item-no.: W1805901

The 51st edition of the Monte Carlo Rally in January 1983 marked the start of the World Rally Championship season. After winning the world championship title with Opel in 1982, Walter Röhrl switched to Lancia and finished on the podium in all six WRC rounds he participated in, winning three times – including in Monte Carlo. Röhrl and his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer finished the season as vice-champions in the drivers' standings, while Lancia, with the last non-all-wheel-drive car in WRC history, won the manufacturers' championship.

The Lancia 037 was an uncompromisingly developed racing car. The chassis was created in a collaboration between Lancia, Abarth, and Pininfarina. Abarth utilized its many years of experience to develop a vehicle that was easy to maintain and technically simple. This was also one of the reasons for not using all-wheel drive. To make maintenance between the individual special stages as simple, quick, and efficient as possible, most components were fastened with only two different types of screws, eliminating the need for frequent tool changes. This included parts such as shock absorbers, wheel nuts, and seat rails, which were therefore easy to assemble. This design gave the Lancia a decisive advantage over competitors such as Audi, whose significantly more complex Audi quattro required far more extensive service work.

Furthermore, the Lancia 037 was consistently designed for lightweight construction. With a body made of glass fiber reinforced plastic and a tubular frame, the weight was optimized as much as possible. A large rear wing provided the necessary downforce on the rear axle. The car was powered by a mid-mounted four-cylinder engine with a supercharger and an output of just over 300 hp.

From the 1982 season onwards, the Lancia factory team competed in the Martini livery. The Italian alcohol brand has been active in motorsport as a sponsor since 1962 and has been represented in all the well-known racing series since then. Martini first appeared in rallying in 1978 together with Porsche, before becoming the main sponsor of Lancia in 1982, with whom they were also active in sports car racing during the 1980s. The blue and red design, which is usually applied to white cars, is one of the most distinctive and recognizable designs in motorsport and also adorns Walter Röhrl's Lancia 037 from 1983.

The model of the winner of the 1983 Monte Carlo Rally has been released by the manufacturer WERK83 in scale 1:18 in their usual high quality and reflects the original as accurately as possible.
