Equipped with a five-cylinder turbo engine and an output of over 500 hp, as well as Audi's famous quattro all-wheel drive, the Audi 200 Trans-Am set new standards in terms of performance and driving stability. The competition had little to compete with the traction of the quattro on dry and wet tracks. Despite the weaker engine than the competition and a steel chassis, the test car in 1987 already showed outstanding lap times and good handling. Great drivers such as Hans-Joachim Stuck, Walter Röhrl and Hurley Haywood tested the fully equipped black test vehicle in order to perfect the Audi for the challenging use in the Trans-Am series.
The body of the Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am was the largest that Audi had built for a racing car up to that point. The regulations of the Trans-Am series limited the vehicle length, but not the width. The finished car, measuring just under five meters long and two meters wide, was an impressive racing car ready for use in the American endurance series in 1988.
The Audi 200 quattro Trans-Am with starting number 44, driven by Hurley Haywood, is particularly memorable. In the 1988 season, he and the Ingolstadt-based company dominated the Trans-Am series. Eight of the 13 race victories went to Audi, two of them to Haywood. With this and other podium finishes, he secured Audi's first overall victory in the championship. The ck-modelcars label WERK83 offers models of Haywood's winning car from the second race of the season in Dallas and the black test car from 1987. The models are manufactured to a scale of 1:18 and with steerable front wheels of the highest quality.
