Pikes Peak 1987 – Walter Röhrl

On 11 July 1987, Walter Röhrl made motorsport history: at the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, he drove the Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 – which had been specially developed for the hill climb – to victory. Röhrl completed the route – just under 20 km long, with 156 bends and an elevation gain of around 1,439 metres – in a sensational time of 10:47.85 minutes – the first driver ever to do so in under eleven minutes.

The Audi officially produced around 598 PS (440 kW) from a 2.1-litre five-cylinder turbo engine. Large front and rear wings, as well as the permanent quattro all-wheel-drive system, were crucial in transferring the enormous power to the ground on the track, which was still largely unpaved at the time. A speed of around 196 km/h was recorded at the fastest point.

This matching miniature reproduces Walter Röhrl’s winning car almost perfectly on a 1:18 scale. It is a die-cast model that is not only intended as a display piece but also features various moving and opening mechanisms.

Thanks to the highly detailed representation of the engine compartment for this scale and the almost identical replicas of elements such as the bucket seat, dashboard and roll cage as well as the otherwise uncompromisingly minimalist interior, the model impressively conveys the character of the original racing car.
