Anyone who thought they had seen it all at the International ADAC Zurich 24h Race was once again proved wrong at the 45th edition. After it had been as warm as it had last been in 1986 and as dry as it had last been in 2001 until an hour before the end, the weather gods intervened. A short but heavy rain shower from Adenauer-Forst to Breidscheid and from Hohe Acht to Galgenkopf shook up the classification.
The number 29 Land Motorsport Audi had done most of the leading work up to that point in front of 205,000 spectators. Connor De Philippi, Christopher Mies, Markus Winkelhock and Kelvin van der Linde then lost two positions due to an engine problem. Tears flowed among the mechanics so close to the big triumph during the most important race of the year. As the rain set in, the Westerwald squad put all their eggs in one basket. The tyre choice was spot on and van der Linde moved back into first place on the penultimate lap. Tears were shed again by Wolfgang Land's team, this time with joy! What a great ride!
But it wasn't only at the top that things got heated up. Also in the numerous classes, at the fringe races, in the paddock or at the Adenauer Racing Day, which traditionally opened the mega-event on Wednesday afternoon. Not to forget the live TV coverage by RTL nitro, which reported live for more than 25 hours, just like last year and 3sat in 1987.
