24 hours Nürburgring Nordschleife 2012
by Ulrich Upietz
30 changes at the front, four brands with lead kilometres, first Audi victory, an exciting start phase and a dramatic finish: the world's biggest motorsport event celebrated a befitting anniversary. For the 40th time, it was "Gentlemen, please start your engines" at the International ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race. For the first time in the history of the Eifel classic, an Audi celebrated an overall victory! And there was no one who would have begrudged the Ingolstadt team this triumph. BMW had the fastest car in the field with the Z4, but suffered just as much from technical problems as the Mercedes SLS teams. Porsche's spearhead Manthey Racing lost all chances in various accidents. The N.Technology P4/5, built on a Ferrari chassis, was the first hybrid car in the world to finish a 24-hour race in 1960s retro design. Some of the fans had been there since the weekend before and once again turned the Hocheifel into the largest camping site in the world. And apart from the actual 24 hours, the 235,000 spectators were offered much more: Fan festival, drift challenge, fireworks, supporting races and show programme. More than 1000 colour photos on 240 pages convey the feeling of "motorsport" in a unique way and the rousing stories in both German and English will not let any of the unique moments of the race be forgotten. A detailed race result and a large statistics section give the yearbook the finishing touch.
