Rudolf Uhlenhaut - engineer and gentleman
The father of the Mercedes 300 SL
by Wolfgang Scheller and Thomas Pollak
Developer of legendary automobiles, brilliant sportsman, highly respected supervisor and reserved private person - that was Rudolf Uhlenhaut (1906 to 1989). This biography vividly describes his life - from childhood in London to retirement as an enthusiastic skipper - and his work: from the optimization of the first Silver Arrows to the Mercedes C111.
On the basis of the complete compilation of his patents, Uhlenhaut's developments are presented and their technical-historical significance is discussed. The authors also trace his motives, methods and goals. In doing so, they came across many previously unpublished works.
The authors have conducted numerous interviews with contemporary witnesses, colleagues and family members and paint a vivid picture of the person and technician Rudolf Uhlenhaut - illustrated, among other things, with more than 100 previously unpublished photos from the private estate.
