Porsche 906 The complete documentation

Development - Evolution - Racing - Vehicle history

Jürgen Barth and Ulrich Trispel

The history of Porsche is rich in legendary designs, not only for sports cars, but also and especially for racing cars. The Porsche 906 is one of the best known and most successful of these, its chassis was a completely new development by Porsche grandson Ferdinand Piëch. Developed for circuit and endurance racing, this car featured many elements for the first time that later became commonplace in racing car construction.

The 906's sporting heyday lasted almost exactly one season, namely that of 1966. In that year, Porsche won the 1966 Challenge Mondial de Vitesse & D'Endurance with various 906s entered as works cars in the World Championship races at Sebring, the Targa Florio, Nürburgring and Le Mans, scoring 32 points ahead of Ferrari and Ford. Porsche also won the World Sports Car Championship Division II up to 2000 cc ahead of Alfa Romeo. And the International Trophy for sports prototypes up to 2 liters also went to the racing car manufacturer from Zuffenhausen that year. However, this was by no means the end of the 906's sporting career: many private drivers continued to rely on the 906 in the following seasons and achieved over 2000 successes worldwide.
