At the end of the 1950s, Porsche began to think about a successor to the original Porsche, the 356. A task that dragged on longer than expected, because on the one hand the 356 was still selling very well. On the other hand, a number of variants were created until the final form emerged under the signature of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. After the 901 premiered at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1963, it took almost a year for Peugeot to become aware of the new model from Zuffenhausen: The French had all three-digit model names protected with a zero in the middle.

The type designation 901 was therefore short-lived. The 901 was renamed the 911. Officially, no 901 was privately owned - Porsche had scrapped the majority of the 82 vehicles built and only sold the rest to factory employees. To this day, little is known about these predecessors of a legendary series.

The book “Porsche 901” attempts to describe the vehicles that made today's legend 911 work. One of the highlights of the book is the story of a 901 barn find from California, the loving restoration of which is documented in detail.
