When Formula 1 comes to Monaco, everyone dresses up. This doesn't just apply to the rich and beautiful who watch the Grand Prix from balconies and yachts along the track. The teams themselves often come up with special appearances for the weekend full of glitz and glamour. In 2024, McLaren came to the Côte d'Azur with an unusual outfit and wrapped both cars in a special design in honor of Ayrton Senna.
There were several occasions for the tribute to the Brazilian Formula 1 legend. On the one hand, the 2024 season marked the 30th anniversary of Senna's death. In addition to McLaren's special design, there were therefore several emotional tributes over the course of the year, for example the show laps by Sebastian Vettel in Imola - the site of the tragic accident - and by Lewis Hamilton at Senna's home race in Brazil. McLaren's special design was also fitting because Senna won five times in a row with this same team in Monaco from 1989 to 1993. It would only be Lewis Hamilton who was able to equal such a winning streak on one track in Barcelona in 2021. Senna's spectacular driving style and the narrow guardrail channel of the principality were always an exciting combination that made for some of the most memorable laps in Formula 1 history.
For the special design of its two MCL38s, McLaren did not use previous Senna cars. Instead, the Brazilian national colors were emblazoned on the cars of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The successful duo did their part in the race to underline the special occasion with good results. Oscar Piastri finished second behind the acclaimed winner Charles Leclerc. Lando Norris also collected important points in fourth place, which would help Zak Brown's team win the Constructors' World Championship. The only downside for everyone involved was the dull course of the race, which prompted the FIA ??to prescribe two pit stops in Monaco before the start of the 2025 season.
ck-modelcars has the two McLarens in Ayrton Senna's tribute design in different versions. Solido is offering Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri's cars in scale 1:18. As usual, the originals are reflected as best as possible, also thanks to the detailed cockpit replica including driver figure. Bburago has also issued both cars in scale 1:43, once with driver figure and a display case and once without driver figure and in blister/cardboard packaging. This means that every collector can choose the special McLaren MCL38 from Monaco in their favorite configuration.
