With the 963, Porsche returned to Le Mans in 2023, aiming for its 20th overall victory in the endurance classic. However, the prototype's debut at the Circuit de la Sarthe was disappointing, and the team failed to reach the podium in its second year. It wasn't until 2025 that Porsche finally finished second, but the frustration over the narrow defeat to Ferrari ran deep. Furthermore, the Zuffenhausen-based manufacturer was unable to replicate its previous year's World Endurance Championship success in the remainder of the season. This led to Porsche's withdrawal from the series, and consequently, Porsche will also be absent from Le Mans in 2026.
Instead, the 963's focus is now on the even more successful US program in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. In the North American sports car series, Porsche has recently been the team to beat, winning the major races on the calendar as well as numerous championship titles.
The starting point for this success story was the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona. There, after a showdown against Cadillac, Porsche secured its 19th victory, cementing its status as the record holder on the Florida beach circuit. Cadillac had initially appeared to have the upper hand, but Porsche's final driver, Felipe Nasr, capitalized on a yellow flag in the final hour to defend the lead with a brilliant performance all the way to the finish. The race ended in a bizarre fashion, as it was unexpectedly flagged off just 1.5 minutes before the end of the 24-hour period.
Alongside Nasr were his factory driver colleagues Dane Cameron from the USA and Matt Campbell from Australia in the winning car, number seven. The lineup was completed by Josef Newgarden, the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion at the time. Newgarden has been racing in IndyCar for Team Penske since 2017, which is also responsible for running the Porsche 963.
The Daytona victory laid the foundation for an outstanding 2024 season. Porsche ultimately won all five championships in the GTP class with the 963 and also celebrated the drivers' and teams' titles in the GTD Pro category, which is contested with GT3 cars. Furthermore, Porsche has remained undefeated since then, with two further overall Daytona victories in the two subsequent years.
