In a record-breaking field of 23 Hypercars in the top class, which could win the overall championship, Penske Motorsport fielded three Porsche 963s at Le Mans 2024. In addition to the two cars, numbers 5 and 6, which competed in the WEC throughout the year, the team, owned by American Roger Penske, entered a third car for the season's highlight.
The weekend was a perfect start for car number 6, driven by Kévin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor, and André Lotterer – who would later celebrate winning the World Championship title. With Frenchman Estre at the wheel, the white and red Porsche secured pole position. In the race, which was marked by unpredictable weather, the trio managed to stay in contention with the leaders until the very end. They narrowly missed out on a podium finish, crossing the line just 1.167 seconds behind the leaders.
The sister car from the World Endurance Championship, driven by Matt Campbell, Michael Christensen, and Frédéric Makowiecki, also delivered a solid performance in front of a record crowd of 329,000 spectators. After a flawless race, the No. 5 car secured sixth place, bringing the second Porsche 963 into the top 10.
The race was less successful, however, for the additional No. 4 car driven by Felipe Nasr, Mathieu Jaminet, and Nick Tandy. The team had already served several penalties and made a pit stop for repairs after contact with another car before Nasr lost control of the car in the Indianapolis corners on Sunday morning and crashed into the barriers, ending their race.
In 2024, Porsche also raised €750 per lap completed on the 13.626-kilometer Circuit de la Sarthe as part of its "Racing for Charity" initiative. In the end, a total of 833 laps were completed, and Porsche rounded up the sum raised for the support of seriously ill children to €911,000.
“The ‘Racing for Charity’ initiative was already a great success in 2023. For the first time, we were able to clearly demonstrate the company’s social responsibility in motorsport,” explained Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, Research and Development. “Motorsport is at the heart of Porsche’s brand identity. But ultimately, it is the people who deserve our recognition, even beyond the factory gates.”
The models in scale 1:18 of the three Porsche 963s from Le Mans 2024 were produced by the manufacturer Ixo in their usual high quality and reflect the originals as accurately as possible. While the cars have identical livery and sponsor decals, they differ in three colors on the engine cover, which is red, white, or black depending on the starting number.
